Too much screen time is bad for us!

This study suggests that children spend too much screen time – and that this is damaging.

Having researched the influences of media on children, I think that these are similar arguments that have been made about television and children in the past.

Too much is bad for them (but not for us as parents).

What do you think?

How much is too much?

Does it effect you? (Apparently 1 extra hour at 14 years leads to 2 lower grades at GCSE – do you disagree)?

I would be interested to hear your opinions.

TV and Film

12843967_sI am really looking forward to the exciting array of film and television offerings over Christmas.

From the offering of Aardman Shaun the Sheep: The Farmer’s Llamas on Boxing day, to the Sherlock Christmas Special and Doctor Who (which is always a must in my home). I am sure there are many others that you can point me to… perhaps on Netflix. (I hope to get to see the last Hunger Games and of course Star Wars films over Christmas as well)! I may even get around to watching more than 1 episode of Breaking Bad and Orange is the New Black. And of course, these are all great programmes to write about and analyse for Media and Culture!   Barbara

I finally joined Netflix

My students have, for the past few years, talked about and discussed programmes that I hadn’t watched. Some of my students talked about Netflix and things that were available through it… reluctantly I signed up  –  but am now a convert. Although, I do think Netflix has pigeonholed me based on my watching things for modules into being a teenager with very specific tastes (this could form the basis of an interesting content analysis perhaps). I still watch the news on terrestrial TV though and of course I have to watch programmes like Doctor Who when they are broadcast.  Looking forward to teaching the TV Times module very much!
